# The History of Alpine Skiing in Narvik

> From generations of skiing to the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2029. Discover the heritage behind Narvik's alpine legacy.

Alpine skiing has deep roots in Narvik. Surrounded by steep mountainsides and with the fjord as its closest neighbour, the city has for generations been a hub for skiing, volunteerism and great sporting moments. Narvik’s history as an alpine destination dates back to the first half of the 20th century, and as early as 1928, the Norwegian National Ski Championships were held on Fagernesfjellet.

Over the years, Narvikfjellet has developed into one of Norway’s most unique ski resorts. In 1960, the resort had the longest FIS-approved alpine ski run in the Nordic region, and that same year, floodlights were installed on the slalom slope, making it possible to compete and train after dark.

Since then, Narvik has hosted a number of national and international championships. The World Cup visited the city in 1992 and 1996, and Narvik has hosted the Norwegian Alpine Skiing Championships several times. More recently, the city also successfully hosted the FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships in 2020 and 2026, events that demonstrated both the expertise and dedication found within the local community.

Today, Narvikfjellet stands out for something truly special: few places in the world can offer elite international sport so close to the city centre, with spectacular views of the Ofotfjord and Arctic mountains as a backdrop. This combination of nature, tradition and experience was a key reason why Narvik was awarded the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2029 in 2024.

The 2029 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships are therefore not the beginning of the story. They are the next chapter in a story written by generations of athletes, volunteers and passionate enthusiasts who have made Narvik one of Norway’s proudest alpine skiing destinations.
